When you hear the word triathlon, you automatically think of people at peak physical shape pushing themselves through the ultimate test of endurance, strength, and physical fitness. So, competing in a triathlon is a great goal to make for yourself. It won’t come easy, but with the proper training and the right equipment, you can accomplish that goal.
What You’re In For
So, what exactly does a triathlon entail? First on your plate is swimming, followed by biking, and then a good run. Distances for each event will vary from competition to competition, but these percentages stay roughly the same: 10-20% swimming, 40-50% biking, and 20-30% running.
Training Tips
One of the main things to remember is to train in all of the events, just like you would in the actual race. One way you could do that is to concentrate on one event a day. Be sure that you do the events in the order they were intended, as well. For example, swim on Monday, bike on Tuesday, run on Wednesday, swim on Thursday, etc. Since you use different muscle sets for each event, this will help condition those muscles to make the transitions. As the race approaches, you can step up your training. Be sure that you are going at least as far as the actual distances of the race when you train.
Equipment is a Must
Now, you can’t just whip out your old 10-speed bike from high school and expect to compete with top athletes. You need the proper equipment for each of the events. The best way to get it is to check out a triathlon store. There you will be able to find all the quality items you will need to compete. Some of those items include a bike, running shoes, clothing, and swim gear.
